Academic Writing Skills

The workshop addresses principles of rhetoric, the use of formats, evidence, tones, lengths, and levels of formality needed in advanced academic writing. Participants learn dealing with hypotheses, analyses and syntheses to explore information resources; and editing and proofreading skills required in the Academic Writing process.

Purpose: The aim of the workshop was to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills that ensure they understand and meet the challenges that rise from Academic Writing. Participants gained confidence in their own abilities and were able to demonstrate how effectively they are able to deal with skills that include researching, drafting, editing, citing and evaluating sources.

Methodology: The workshop is conducted in a highly interactive format, incorporating participant-centered learning activities such as pair and group work activities, exemplars and one to one consultation time and feedback.   The participant’s handout is designed both as a learning tool to develop participant skills and knowledge during the workshop, and as a resource guide.  The materials are also designed in a way that the participants are initially given an opportunity to reflect on their writing samples and give opportunities for instructor - participant feedback. Hence the purpose of this workshop is to enhance academic writing and critical thinking skills and to develop essential research abilities.

Content in brief: The workshop allows participants to reflect on academic written work and become more aware of the stages required to plan an Academic essay adequately. It also attempts to define the structure and form of persuasive writing including aspects such as coherence, organization, and incorporation and evaluation of sources. There are also opportunities for participants to address issues of reviewing, drafting, critical thinking and checking argument logic.
