APA Referencing and Annotated Bibliography

The workshop addresses the issues of plagiarism and its consequences in North American academia. It stresses the importance of academic honesty and introduces a variety of techniques to avoid plagiarism through APA referencing style and annotated bibliography. It also discusses language issues that may arise when using APA referencing style.

Purpose:  The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills that ensure their understanding of academic honesty, plagiarism, and its consequences for students in North American academia.  In addition, it introduces ways to avoid plagiarism by using APA referencing style and creating annotated bibliography.

Methodology: The workshop is conducted in a highly interactive format incorporating participant-centered learning activities class discussion activities, a video, and opportunities for participants to reflect on their own writing styles and assignments.   Workshop handouts are designed in such a way that they can become both a learning tool to develop participants’ skills and knowledge during the workshop, and as a resource guide.

Content in brief: The workshop consists of three parts and a debriefing session. The first part focuses on the issues of plagiarism and ways to avoid it. The participants are provided with the definition of plagiarism as well as York University policies on academic honesty. The workshop instructors also introduce the consequences of plagiarism for university students and discuss ways to use citations properly. The second part introduces APA referencing style and annotated bibliography. The instructors explain the conventions of APA in-text citations and long and short quotations providing examples of each. They also introduce the definition and purpose of annotated bibliography and explain the guidelines of creating one. The third part provides tips on how to improve the participants’ academic writing skills using APA referencing style that include avoiding wordiness, redundancy, and bias and improving language  precision and clarity. The workshop ends with a discussion of the academic writing related issues including critical thinking skills.
