The workshop addresses Effective Communication for Nurses as a skill that allows a transfer of information between a source and a receiver. Most of the communication is health-related information and could be verbal or nonverbal, written or spoken, personal or impersonal, issue-specific, or even relationship-oriented.
Purpose: The aim of this workshop is to increase interpersonal effectiveness by understanding the impact of the participant’s communication style. Through this workshop, participants have been able to assess their own, performance in the ICELBAN test, and learn about communication styles, about affirmation, about feedback and about understanding not only their own personalities and preferences, but also the preferences of others.
Methodology: The workshop is conducted in a highly interactive format, incorporating participant-centered learning activities such as pair and group work activities, videos, an article, a case study, and a role play. The participant’s handout is designed both as a learning tool to develop participant skills and knowledge during the workshop, and as a resource guide.
Content in brief: The workshop starts by defining communication and deals with myths and realities of communication and variables in the communication process including the skills of encoding, decoding and using silent messages. The participants are encouraged to understand all aspects of both Verbal Communication and Nonverbal Communication. The training tackles as well the rules of feedback, communication barriers, and inquiry techniques in general and in relation to the nursing context.
